Candle Burning Instructions
General Candle Burning Instructions
Trim Before Every Burn
-
Trim wick to ¼ inch before lighting — even on the first burn.
-
A proper wick height allows a calm, steady flame and minimizes soot or smoking.
-
If the flame grows tall or flickers aggressively, extinguish, trim, and relight.
Allow the First Burn to Set the Memory
-
Let the candle burn long enough for the melt pool to reach close to the edges.
-
Container candles: typically 1–2 hours depending on diameter
-
Pillars:* reach as close to the edge as safely possible without dripping
-
-
This helps prevent tunneling.
Burn Time Per Session
-
Do not burn any candle longer than 3–4 hours at a time.
-
After extinguishing, let the candle cool and the wax reset before re-lighting.
Positioning
-
Keep candle on a heat-resistant, level surface free of drafts.
-
Allow 4–6 inches of space around the flame so it can breathe.
-
Keep away from fans, vents, open windows, or high-traffic areas.
Extinguishing
-
Use a candle snuffer, wick dipper, or gently blow out.
-
Re-center wick while wax is still soft if needed.
How to Burn Beeswax Pillar Candles
Beeswax burns hotter and slower than paraffin and soy, so pillars behave differently. Proper burning ensures a beautiful “shell” and long life.
Expect a Natural Shell
-
Beeswax pillars naturally form a firm outer shell that protects the flame.
-
Allowing this shell to build evenly helps the candle last longer.
Managing the Melt Pool
-
On each burn, allow the melt pool to approach the edges — but avoid letting it overflow.
-
If wax starts to drift unevenly or spill, extinguish and gently “hug” (press) the warm walls inward to support the melt pool.
The Wick
-
Always keep wick trimmed to ¼ inch.
-
A wick that becomes too long may cause mushrooming, tall flames, or dripping.
-
If flame is too small or tunneling occurs, carefully pour off a small amount of liquid wax or trim the walls inward.
Burn Duration
-
Ideal burn time per session: 2–3 hours for pillars 2–3 inches wide.
-
Larger pillars (3×6, 4×6, etc.) may need 3–4 hours to fully open the melt pool.
Correcting a Tunnel
-
Beeswax is more forgiving than other waxes. If a tunnel begins forming:
-
Burn longer on the next session
-
Gently squeeze (“hug”) warm side walls inward
-
Ensure candle is in a draft-free location
-
Avoiding Drips
-
Dripping is usually a sign of a draft or wick too long.
-
Extinguish, trim wick, reposition candle to a calm area, and relight.
How to Burn Beeswax Taper Candles
Tapers are elegant, but they burn differently from pillars due to their shape and tall flame.
Use Proper Holders
-
Always place tapers in a snug-fitting, stable candle holder.
-
If your holder is slightly loose, melt the base of the taper for 1–2 seconds and press gently into place.
Avoid Drafts
-
Tapers respond dramatically to airflow — drafts cause:
-
Uneven burning
-
Leaning
-
Drips down the side
-
Excessive flame movement
-
-
Keep them away from fans, vents, ceiling AC, or open windows.
Burn Time
-
Tapers can burn for long stretches, but best practice is 1–2 hours per session to maintain shape and reduce dripping.
-
Longer burns are fine as long as the flame stays steady and upright.
Managing Drips
Beeswax tapers generally drip less — unless exposed to drafts or an untrimmed wick.
To reduce drips:
-
Trim wick to ¼ inch before each burn
-
Keep tapers vertical
-
Avoid direct airflow
-
If dripping begins, extinguish, trim the wick, and reposition
Flame Height
-
Beeswax tapers produce a bright, warm flame.
-
If flame becomes too tall or flickers sharply, trim wick or move the candle away from airflow.
What to Expect
-
A soft, glowing teardrop flame
-
Slow consumption down the length of the taper
-
Minimal smoke and a faint honey aroma
